Psalm 4

For the Leader; with string-music. A Psalm of David.

A David psalm.

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness, Thou who didst set me free when I was in distress; be gracious unto me, and hear my prayer.

When I call, give me answers. God, take my side! Once, in a tight place, you gave me room; Now I'm in trouble again: grace me! hear me!

O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be put to shame, in that ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood? Selah

You people—how long will you shame my honor? How long will you keep loving lies and chasing shadows? Selah

But know that the LORD hath set apart the godly man as His own; the LORD will hear when I call unto Him.

Look at this: God has set apart the faithful for himself. God listens when I pray to him.

Tremble, and sin not; commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah

Be angry, and don't sin. When you're on your bed, examine your inner motives, and be silent. Selah

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

Bring your best gifts to God, and trust in him.

Many there are that say: Oh that we could see some good! LORD, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.

A lot of people say, "Who will show us better times?" LORD, let your face shine on us.

Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than when their corn and their wine increase.

You've filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and wine abound.

In peace will I both lay me down and sleep; for Thou, LORD, makest me dwell alone in safety.

I lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.
